Rituals and Offerings of Bhaimi Ekadashi Vrat
In this vrat, a golden idol of Varaha Deva is made, covered with a white cloth, and placed on a copper plate for worship. Observers of the vrat must fast throughout the day and recite various hymns and prayers dedicated to different deities. The next day, after feeding Brahmins, the idol is donated to a Brahmin to complete the ritual.
Legend of Bhaimi Ekadashi Vrat
On the Shukla Ekadashi of the Magha month, Kumbhidevi, the mother of the Pandavas, observed a fast. As it was both Magha month, the weather was extremely cold. Kunti was worried about how she would bathe and observe the Bhaimi Ekadashi fast in such harsh conditions.
Somehow, she managed to bathe and was shivering as she walked back home. On the way, she met Bhima. Seeing his mother shivering in the cold, Bhima became furious. Lord in anger heated an iron plow and immersed it in water while chanting the name of Lord Krishna. Instantly, the cold vanished. Lord Krishna, being the protector of his devotees, fulfilled Bhima’s wish, and Kumbhidevi was relieved from the cold.

However, another problem arose. The fire in the water caused distress to the water deity, Varuna. In agony, Varuna approached Lord Krishna and pleaded, “O Lord! I am burning, please save me.” Seeing Varuna’s suffering, Lord Krishna felt compassion and said, “There is only one way to save you. If Bhima observes the Ekadashi fast today, your burning sensation will disappear.” Assured by Krishna’s words, Varuna left.
Following Lord Krishna’s command, Bhima observed the Ekadashi fast. As a result, Varuna was immediately freed from his burning pain. From that day, the Shukla Ekadashi of the Magha month (Indian Month) came to be known as Bhaimi Ekadashi.
