Parivartini Ekadashi 2025 (Parshwa Ekadashi) – Significance, Story & Puja Vidhi
The Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadra month is known as Parivartini Ekadashi 2025 or Parshwa Ekadashi. On this sacred day, Lord Shrihari Jagannath changes His position (parshva parivartan) during His cosmic rest. Hence, it is also called the Ekadashi of Divine Turning. (Parivartini Ekadashi Mahatmya)
In the Brahmavaivarta Purana, this Ekadashi is described as a supremely meritorious day – bestowing heaven, granting liberation, and destroying all sins.
Devotees who worship Lord Vamana and Lord Vishnu with devotion become revered across the three worlds and ultimately attain the abode of Vishnu.
The Dialogue between Yudhishthira and Shri Krishna
Once, King Yudhishthira asked Lord Shri Krishna:
“O Achyuta! How do You remain in divine rest during the four holy months (Chaturmasya)? How do You turn to Your side? What should devotees do during this period of Your sleep? And why did You bind King Bali?”
In reply, Lord Krishna narrated the wondrous story of His Vamana Avatar.
The Story of Vamana Avatar and King Bali’s Great Donation
King Bali, the grandson of Prahlada, was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. He excelled in performing yajnas, worship of gods, and acts of charity. However, after defeating the Devas, Indra took refuge in Lord Vishnu.
To restore cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana in the household of Kashyapa and Aditi. Appearing at Bali’s grand yajna, the dwarf Brahmachari asked for three steps of land.
Although Guru Shukracharya warned him, the truthful King Bali, firm in his dharma, vowed to grant Lord Vamana (Avatar of Vishnu) His wish.
Then, Lord Vamana assumed His cosmic form:
- With one step He covered the heavens,
- With the second step He spanned the netherworld,
- And for the third, Bali humbly offered his own head.
Placing His foot upon Bali’s head, the Lord declared that He would always remain near him.
